Greetings music enthusiasts and groove aficionados! Today, we invite you to immerse yourself in the vibrant and soulful world of AXNÉR, a dynamic duo stitching the golden threads of disco’s yesteryears into the vibrant tapestry of today’s music landscape. With Julia, the enchanting voice hailing from Malmö, Sweden, and Chris, the disco-freak guitarist igniting the strings with fervour, they are here to take you on a melodious journey that’s as fresh as it is nostalgic. Prepare yourself for an odyssey where the past meets the present, swirling in a harmonious dance that’s quintessentially AXNÉR.
Leroy Hutson – Lucky Fellow (Disco Freaks Edit)
Julia: Chris’ first release with Acid Jazz Records that set him on the path to creating original disco music. A handful of tracks were demo’d around this period and we were lucky enough to see Leroy Hutson play live a couple times.
Chris: Ralph Rolle, drummer of Nile Rodgers & Chic, was a special guest on The Disco Freaks Radio Show. Julia had come by to take some photos and was singing along quietly to this track that Ralph had chosen on the show. He shouted out ‘girl you can sing!’ and offered to play drums for us then & there. We were in the studio with him a couple months later recording 4 tracks.
Nile Rodgers & Chic – I’ll Be There
The first new Chic track in decades. This one featured Ralph on drums and was a reference point of bringing modern production elements to real disco music. We took inspiration from the music video when directing our own debut video for ‘Got The Look’.
Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals – Come Down (Tiny Desk Concert)
We were both obsessed with this Tiny Desk Concert. Had this in mind when we came up with the groove for ‘Got The Look’
AXNÉR – Got The Look
Julia: Our debut song & music video. We’ve been listening to this back while putting this together and feel proud of how far we came from our first demos. We learnt a lot from Ralph. The music video was filmed at a venue in Hackney called Oslo during a Disco Freaks night. I’ll be singing AXNÉR’s tracks live for the first time as part of Disco Freaks 10th birthday there in October.
David Bowie – Let’s Dance
Chris: Of course Bowie is a legend and we love him but we’re including this for a different reason. Ralph gave us a little tip in the studio from ‘his good friend Nile’ to include a little echo guitar riff at the start of a phrase to bring out the impact. You can hear Nile Rodgers use this all the way back in 1983 on Let’s Dance!
AXNÉR – Shout From The Rooftop
Our current release. We’ve a music video out on 11th September. It was the first track we demoed and has taken years to get it to the current place. The wait was worth it. If we hadn’t waited we would have missed working with Al Kent, Kousto, John Morales & 2 members of Chic!
Kiki Gyan – Disco Dancer
Chris: We’d been dancing to disco music for years but never properly listened to the details, chords & instrumentation. Had to relearn writing songs in this style and this track helped a lot when rewiring my guitar brain to play funk.
L’Impératrice – Agitations Tropicales
Chris: Incredible group. Their music has soundtracked a lot of our life the last few years. Six fantastic musicians with an amazing live show. This song has a nice balance of disco influence with modern production. The synth work on this informed the little touches in Rooftops.
Julia: I wasn’t sure I had a ‘big’ enough voice for disco in the early stages of AXNÉR so when I heard Flore, a jazz vocalist, singing on these amazing groovy tracks it was very comforting and reassuring.
AXNÉR – Shout From The Rooftop (Kousto Remix)
We’d include all 3 of the new remixers featured on this but Kousto’s is the first out. This one’s a great remix as it turns the track on its head over a 4/4 house beat. We love the way Val sampled the vocals into an almost child-like chant – reminds of us some of Jungle’s tracks. Check out his Friendship For Lovers EP out on Folamour’s label to hear more of this lovely production.
