Next to reviewing and playing music from well established names, i love to spot upcoming talents and give them the exposure they deserve as well. With nowadays many people being able to create beats on their computer systems as simple as on smartphones and tablets it’s hard to search for real talent among the many new tracks being released every week. Which makes it also harder to stand out from the crowd en show your skills.

One guy that grabbed my attention recently goes under the artist name ‘blaqkongo’ who with his new EP really surprised me as his style and quality could easily be measured with the Deep House music from the Italian based Black Loops or the Dutch music duo Detroit Swindle.

Before we look at his latest release blaqkongo – 38 Days 38 Ways, and the extra track that he exclusively gave to us to giveaway as a freebie. Let’s look at who blaqkongo is and what he does.

blaqkongo

blaqkongo, the man behind the music.

blaqkongo who goes under his real name Brendan Witherspoon is a born in Congo Ghanese / Liberian DJ and music creator currently based Cape Town, South Africa. In fact he makes us introducing him to you very easy as he presents himself very well in the video here below.

He reflects his heritage and passion in making music in the Deeper styles of House and Electronic music with influences from the 90’s Chicago Deep House sound, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Latin music combined with elements from his own roots in Central and West African music.

When you listen to his music his roots are clearly hearable and so is his passion in making quality music that jumps out and connects people.

The back story by blaqkongo himself.

So far there are no musical boundaries for this rising star in the electronic music scene, who already played across the globe in countries like, the UK, Switzerland, Belgium, and even in here in The Netherlands. With beautiful influences in his quality music and already a couple of dope tracks and EPs on his name like his ‘A Gemini Moon Phase’ which even got featured by Red Bull here.

I’m very honored that i can present you this music review on blaqkongo – 38 Days 38 Ways which i earlier played in music episode 359 and now featuring here with an additional exclusive free remix on one of the tracks on the EP.

blaqkongo – 38 Days 38 Ways EP | Odd One Inn.

As scheduled for a release on the 19th of June 2020 this EP recently came out on Odd One Inn. The EP called 38 Days 38 Ways includes 4 well crafted Deep house tracks in the likes of and earlier mentioned Black Loops, Detroit Swindle, but also Atjazz and Joe Kay.

The EP was crafted as a special project in a very unique moment in time when almost the whole world was subject to Covid-19. With many countries in a complete or so called ‘intelligent lockdown’, blaqkongo and musical compadre Mr Blasé started crafting a new track each week for their followers that were both easy to listen to as well as dance floor ready cuts. This is also where the title from blaqkongo – 38 Days 38 Ways lends its name from as the EP was created in 38 Days while in quarantine.

On the official EP release you will find 4 tracks which i will highlight here below. As part of an exclusive and free download that i present you every week here at Dirty Disco, blaqkongo added a extra remix as giveaway which is not on the EP and for exclusively available through Dirty Disco.

  • Somethin’ Bout U: What i like in this track is how the bass line rolls through it taking you into the groove, while the other elements make sure your laidback zen moment stays in place. With that said, this track is as well easy to listen to as to dance on.
  • Trust In Me: This one brings another dreamy deep house vibe where love definitely is the main ingredient. Hearable through the energetic evolving opening up like a flower synth stabs that take me higher, when other elements get added another emotional moment of goosebump power occurs here in my Dirty Disco studio.
  • Always There: This gem brings you a minimalistic but sophisticated Deep House experience, where a deep sub bass moves you around the arrangement. Elements as the ‘Always There’ vocal, the raw sort of clockwork sound, the rhythmic percussion and the synth melody make sure that standing still is not an option here.
  • Be Free: The last in line (before we jump to the exclusive free download from blaqkongo). Let the rhythm set your inner soul, mind and body free. This track immediately made me feel comfortable and think of a groove that could easily be crafted by Detroit Swindle. The ‘Be Free / everybody wants to be loved’ vocal together with the FX VOX that fades in towards the melancholic melody gave me instant goosebumps.

Listening to the 4 original tracks carefully made me come to the conclusion that this man is a real Deep House talent. What a amazing EP! With all tracks highly praised by me i have to say ‘Trust In Me’ is my favorite one, but would stand out with first listening to to other tracks.

  • Somethin’ Bout U (Forgotten Feelings Mix) (Exclusive Free Download): Here we are at the last track which is not on the EP and for now only available through the Dirty Disco website. This is blaqkongo’s present to you as his follower to show his appreciation for believing in him and his music. The Forgotten Feelings Mix on ‘Somethin’ Bout U’ is a dreamscape love story in music. This one connects the dots as music connects people and shows that we are all the same, but each with our own hearts and mind. If there is something that connects it’s music!
