Every now and then something special comes along and the quality of it is heads above the rest! Detroit native, Brian Kage, is no stranger to the studio, whether it be as a first class producer in his own right, or as a high end mastering engineer to many Detroit Luminaries. This coming week Brian Kage releases a body of work that is so good, it hard to believe that one can have some many sold tracks on one album. The album is called ‘Timeless Times’ and in many ways is the release of his life.
Having worked closely with the incredible Norm Tally over the years of his esteemed career, it seemed fitting that Brian should share with us some highlights from one on his most beloved labels.
One of my most favourite label is Upstairs Asylum created and managed by Detroit’s own, Norm Talley…
Brian Kage
Tell us a little about the label history?
Upstairs Asylum is relatively new, but every release has been ultra fresh and really the epitome of the current sound of Detroit Deep House and Techno. Vinyl only, and great packaging! I was even fortunate to provide a song to a V/A compilation released on the label.
Norm Talley & Moodyman – Jus Hangin (D’Julz Edit)
Deep Classic mashup of Norm Talley & Moodymann together by the wizard D’Julz. Deep dopeness here.
Jon Dixon – Riverside Drive
Incredible producer, incredible musician, Jon Dixon’s Riverside Drive is the perfect soundtrack for a smooth ride on Jefferson Ave by the Detroit river.
Mike Clark – In My Arms
Big hit by the man, Mike “Agent X” Clark. “In My Arms” works on the toughest dance floors and makes everyone ready to groove.
Gari Romalis – D-Env3
Tough, raw, and gritty banger by Detroit’s best secret, Gari Romalis. Huge track that fits in both house and techno sets.
Delano Smith – Remembrance
Delano can do no wrong. This one is a standout with an infectious bassline, dubby Detroit chords, and some big time 909 drum programming. A real winner!
Norm Talley – Digital XTC
Norm steps up to the plate with this deep techno gem that will surely get asses movin’ with it’s grimey, filthy groove.
DJ Aakmael – Deep Cookie
Deepness. A perfect tune for starting the night off just right.
Brian Kage – PolyPhonic Phonk
I wrote this one as a tribute to the great Mike Huckaby using samples from his Wave synth. Norm loved it and asked to release. RIP Mike.
End conclusion.
That wraps up a truly enlightening session with Brian Kage. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Brian for joining us and sharing such profound insights into his creative process. ‘Timeless Times’ promises to be a landmark release, and I personally cannot wait to experience each track. Make sure you don’t miss out on this phenomenal album, set to drop early May on Michigander. Head over to briankage.com or Juno to stay updated and secure your copy of what’s bound to be a transcendent auditory experience. Thank you for tuning in, and keep feeding your soul with great music!
