It’s been two weeks since Calvin Harris came out with what can safely be called the collaboration of the summer, but here he is again today with new music. Things must move fast in the world of pop music and so “Stay With Me” is already followed up by “New To You”.
If it wasn’t already clear that the Scottish DJ and producer is coming up with a new record, it undoubtedly is now. Musically, it may not always be interesting, but the list of collaborations on Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2 certainly is. We already had Dua Lipa and Young Thug, 21 Savage and most recently Pharrell Williams, Justin Timberlake and Halsey, but now another impressive trio follows with Normani, Tinashe and Offset.
As mentioned, however, things aren’t always that interesting on a musical level with Calvin Harris these days, which is somewhat the case on “New To You” as well. The song is strung together with a sludgy bass line, diluted with euphoric strings, but the pace is already a bit too slow to keep your attention.
Normani’s voice does eventually lend itself perfectly to the beat and Tinashe also blends in smoothly, but as mentioned, not too much actually happens in the five minutes that “New To You” lasts. Offset’s bars can’t change that either, and so this single seems to be one that you can hear passing by in the background at your favorite beach bar. A real hit is not in the cards today, unfortunately.
Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2 will be released on August 5. The track list also features big names such as Snoop Dogg, Jorja Smith, 6lack, Charlie Puth, Pusha T and more.
