Hey everyone, it’s Kono here, and I’ve got something special for you today. Growing up, I was that kid flipping through vinyl stacks and dreaming of beats that could shake the room, or at least my mum’s old living room rug. So when I got the chance to sit down with Clive From Accounts, a London based maestro who’s just dropped his debut LP The Very Best of Clive From Accounts on Razor N Tape, I couldn’t wait to dig into the tracks that shaped his sound. This isn’t just an interview, it’s a journey through the beats and memories that turned an office daydreamer into a UK house and garage sensation. From dancing to 7 inch singles as a kid to crafting club bangers like “Heavier,” Clive’s story resonates with anyone who’s ever felt music in their bones. Let’s dive into the ten tracks that made him who he is today, trust me, you’ll want to stick around for this one.

Clive From Accounts Press shot

Here office man Clive talks us through ten tracks that mark his journey in sound.

Chris Montez – Lets Dance

Some of my earliest memories were of dancing around like crazy to records played on my Mum’s old Dansette player. We had a little ice cream tub filled with 7 inch singles and this would always get a spin.

Miles Davis – Black Satin/What If/Agharta Prelude Dub

I grew up in a music loving household and was exposed to an eclectic mix of styles. My dad’s main love is probably jazz though and the 70’s electric side of that has always resonated with me. Bill Laswell’s Panthalassa reconstructions of Miles came out when I was 12 but also really sum up what I was hearing early on.

Primal scream – Higher Than The Sun – Higher Than The Orb mix

Early secondary school when me and my friends started really getting into music we had a bit of a leg up from our older brothers. To be honest the whole of this list could be Screamadelica tracks but this one’s speaking to me today. Chemical Brothers and Prodigy were also super important to me then (and now).

Roni Size – Trust Me

The first record I ever bought was Roni’s Watching Windows 12” followed by New Forms as the first vinyl LP. I’d been introduced to Drum and Bass after my older cousin played me LTJ Bukem’s Logical Progression. This kicked started me properly Djing and was a big turning point in my early teenage life.

DJ Shadow – What does your Soul Look Like pt 4

I really fell in love with hip hop through groups like A Tribe called Quest, Beastie Boys, De La Soul and Pete Rock & CL Smooth. Then discovering Endtroducing by DJ Shadow was an important milestone. It really started me obsessing about the art of sampling and digging for obscure old records.

Mickey and Soul Generation – Iron Leg

Shadow & Cut Chemist’s Brainfreeze mixes led me into the world of funk 45s. Iron leg is one of the first proper OG 7 inches I picked up and is still one of my favourites. Around this time me and my friend Pooch started our first paid weekly DJ gigs at Bar Solo, next to The Good Mixer in Camden.

Jackknife Lee – Making Me Money (Switch remix)

I went to uni up in Leeds in 2006. There was lots of fresh, exciting music coming out at the time but for me Switch was the king. This one always reminds me of those golden days and endless parties. I made the change from making hip hop to more electronic stuff at this time.

Steve Reich – Different Trains

At uni I studied Creative Music and Sound Technology. One part of the course that really blew me away was learning about electro-acoustic music and Musique Concrete in particular. Influenced by that movement, this Steve Reich piece (like most of his) brings a tear to the eye whenever I hear it.

Herbert – I Hadn’t known (I only heard)

Those studies also led me to discover the mighty Matthew Herbert through his crazy album Plat du Jour. This track of his is simply perfect and one of the big reasons, alongside Mr Fingers, Pepe Braddock, Fouk etc that I drifted towards that deep house sound. A constant inspiration.

Clive From Accounts – Konsumu Suru

Fast forward to now and this is the third single from my debut album – The Very Best of Clive From Accounts. The album covers some ground stylistically and you can see some of the reasons for that above. Hope you get something out of it!

Thank you!

And there you have it, ten tracks that trace Clive From Accounts evolution from a kid spinning records to the mastermind behind The Very Best of Clive From Accounts. A massive thank you to Clive for sharing his journey with us, those stories hit me right in the nostalgia, and I hope they did for you too. His new LP is out now on Razor N Tape, packed with everything from soulful house vibes to certified club bangers. Go stream or grab the vinyl, there’s even a secret track waiting for you! Hit the link below to check it out, and let me know your favorite track in the comments. Until next time, keep the beats close and the volume up!
