Darran Nugent has a story to tell through every beat, every loop, and every bassline. As a Galway native who cut his teeth in the underground scene, Darran brings an unmistakable authenticity to his sound, drawing from the Chicago house influences that first sparked his journey. His latest release, Chicago EP on Freerange, reflects a love for the genre’s roots while pushing the boundaries with fresh, energetic sounds. I sat down with Darran to dive into the music that has left a lasting mark on him, tracks that shaped his artistry, influenced his journey, and still inspire his creations today. Here are the ten tracks that Darran calls essential to his sound, each with its own unique story and memory.
1. Lil Louis – French Kiss
What to say about ‘French Kiss’ that hasn’t already been said. Always imitated, never bettered.
That groove slays me. The chunky, raw drums and snares are savage, and that bassline and dreamy synth line make this possibly the greatest house record of all time. It’s a tie between this and ‘French Kiss’ possibly.
3. Lil Louis – I Called U (Why’d U Fall)
You guessed it I’m obsessed with those Lil Louis records. Total unapologetic fanboy! Lil Louis is the quintessential godfather of house and these track still sounds incredible after all these years. ‘Why’d U Fall’ is the best mix of this track without question.
4. Lil Louis – Blackout (Phase II)
Blackout (Phase 2) make those hairs stand on the back of my neck. This track has it all and those looping synths are like hypnosis for the soul.
5. Slam – Positive Education
The similarity to ‘Altered States’ is undeniable (those snares, that bassline, the synth riff…it’s all there. Still it has an energy all its own and the Glasgow duo outdid themselves here. An anthem for every 90’s clubber!
6. Moodymann – I Can’t Kick This Feelin When It Hits
The best Moodmann record. It’s basically Chic’s ‘I Want Your Love’ looped to perfection…just like Carl Craig did with Paperclip People’s ‘Throw’. So simple, so pure, so house. The 90’s were a mecca for gems like this.
7. The Chicago Connection – Dancin ( Mark Grant Remix)
There was a period where certain labels dominated the genre. At one point it was Cajual Records from Chicago. Everything they put out was pretty much fire.
8. Boo Williams – Midnight Express
Relief Records was a sub label of Chicago’s Cajual Records. Boo William’s ‘Midnight Express’ exemplifies that jacked up, tracky, raw, energetic Relief sound. Pure energy.
9. Soul Capsule – Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)
It’s like they captured everything that’s beautiful about music, life, dancing, loving, breathing, existing in one tune. An incredibly, beautiful, emotional record. “Seasons change. Places change. People change. Best friends become strangers…but this music remains constant. A capsule of time and emotions”. I saw this posted as a youtube comment and stole it. Sums it up perfectly.
10. Romanthony – The Wanderer
This track is on another level and there isn’t anything else like it out there. A classic and Romanthony was a one of a kind talent. Pure class!
Conclusion.
A huge thanks to Darran Nugent for taking us through the records that have shaped his musical path. From classic grooves to those personal memories that fuel his tracks, it’s clear that the energy of Chicago house runs deep in his music. Make sure to check out his new Chicago EP, where he channels these influences into dancefloor-ready tracks with a fresh twist. Don’t miss the standout remix from the legendary Abacus, it’s a release that nods to the past while looking firmly ahead. Available now on all digital platforms.
