Down Jazz Records was founded by producer David Schwartz and this week, the label presents us with a super-heavyweight remix EP entitled ‘Rocket Love’ by multi storied talent collective, Detroit Rising with reworks by some of the UKs production royalty – Jimpster, Kaidi Tatham, Sean McCabe and EVM128, all mastered by Atjazz. Detroit Rising is a collective and is comprised of original members of Parliament-Funkadelic, Prince, Public Enemy and Mary J Blige. In 2018, they created an album – A Cosmic Jazz Funk Adventure, recorded at the Motown Studios Detroit. We spoke to the head of this fascinating project – David Schwartz – about some music that has impacted his musical journey.
When I was a kid, this album blew my mind! You can do that on drums? I want to do that… And I loved the psychedelic art.
Zeppelin is and are amazing musicians and songwriters. My high school friends and I would drum and sing along for hours. Their albums are so well produced.
Such a summer vibe! I love the feeling and the vocals. One summer, I went to a live, free B52’s show in Central Park NYC right after I performed with my drum band at a big festival downtown. Such a magical day of music.
I played this album over and over and over, on tape and vinyl. Carried me through dark winter nights during college. At one live show in NYC, I somehow caught a signed drumstick that Jerome Brailey, the P-funk drummer threw into the crowd. I was now officially on the mothership.
Genius, jazz-rock that makes me want to dance! Where did Nu-Jazz begin? right here.
More Genius, dance jazz-rock. Who plays at this skill level? Only a few across time.
My disco soul days. Such a groovy tune to dance and sing along with. I just saw them this summer in New York City. Still amazing to this day.
UK electro funk, jazz, soul, a whole different way of thinking. I heard a whole new sound coming out of the UK! More people should be re-discovering these amazing tracks.
This instrumental sound is electronic? how do they get that lovely reverb and echo? chills up my spine.
I’m amazed at how well the OG song came out. The team was incredible from musicians and vocalists to mixing, mastering, art and production. The Remix Dub by Jimpster, takes it to a whole new level! Such a catchy and cool melody! The vocals are so soulful! This is one heck of a groovy dance tune! These albums from start to finish took years of work by a big crew! Lots of love attention went into this special project. That’s what it takes!
And that’s a wrap on this sonic journey with the legends of rhythm and groove! A huge shoutout to David Schwartz and the entire Down Jazz Records family for keeping the beats alive and kicking. With the latest release adding a fresh layer to their already stellar collection, they continue to set the bar for what Dirty Disco and Down Jazz can be.
