There is a certain kind of deep house that does not need to shout to make an impact. It moves with patience, warmth, musicianship and feeling. DFRA’s new A Quiet Storm EP on Ascension on Wax sits exactly in that space.

The Colombian artist, now based in Buenos Aires, brings together the depth of classic house, the swing of jazz, and the soulful language of gospel, hip hop, disco and R&B. Across the EP, you can hear an artist who is not just programming grooves, but composing moods. From the rolling saxophone work on Quiet Storm to the warm piano textures of Strings and the soulful nostalgia of Charlene, this is club music with roots, detail and intention.

The release also includes a remix from Detroit’s Jon Dixon, who takes Charlene into deeper, more meditative territory while keeping the connection between jazz improvisation and machine rhythm alive.

For this Track Talk, DFRA selected ten records that shaped his musical identity. Instead of breaking them down one by one, he offers one wider reflection on the sounds, cultures and traditions that continue to inspire him. What follows is a personal map through soul, jazz, neo soul, hip hop, disco, house and beyond.

Track Talk: Records That Shaped DFRA’s Sound

“These are the 10 tracks that best represent me musically. I’ve always felt a strong connection to African American music genres. Soul, R&B, hip hop, neo soul, jazz, disco, and their many branches have been a constant influence throughout my life.

That’s why my release A Quiet Storm reflects a fusion between club oriented deep house and the sounds of traditional jazz, particularly hard bop and bebop, while also incorporating touches of soul and neo soul.

This selection of songs is a small reflection of my artistic identity: ten tracks that, in one way or another, express who I am as a musician.”

About A Quiet Storm EP

A Quiet Storm EP is released on Berlin based label Ascension on Wax as catalogue number AOW005. The EP is available on 12 inch vinyl and digital formats, and continues the label’s focus on soulful, jazz informed house music with a strong visual and physical identity.

The title track, Quiet Storm, opens the release with a deep rolling groove and expressive saxophone work. Strings moves into a more dreamy and melodic space, built around warm piano textures and a rich jazz atmosphere. Charlene brings soulful vocals and nostalgic chord progressions into a house framework that feels both classic and forward looking.

Jon Dixon completes the package with a Detroit shaped remix of Charlene. His version strips the track back, rebuilds it with deeper textures and keys, and places the original in a more reflective, machine driven context.

Conclusion

DFRA’s selection tells you a lot about the emotional architecture behind A Quiet Storm EP. This is not deep house made only for the floor, even though it definitely belongs there. It is music shaped by jazz phrasing, soul sensitivity, house tradition and a clear respect for Black American musical lineage.

That is what makes this release interesting. A Quiet Storm EP does not treat jazz as decoration. It uses jazz, soul and house as connected languages. The result is warm, refined and musical, while still carrying enough groove and weight for a proper late night session.

A Quiet Storm EP by DFRA is out now on Ascension on Wax, including the Jon Dixon remix. Listen, buy or explore the release through Ascension on Wax and dive deeper into the records that helped shape DFRA’s sound.
