When we talk about modern house music classics, few tracks capture that perfect balance between emotion and groove quite like FCL’s “Can We Try”.
Originally released back in 2014 on We Play House Recordings, it followed their breakout hit “It’s You”, a record that became a modern-day anthem and cemented FCL’s place in house history. With Can We Try, the Belgian duo San Soda and Red D, alongside the incredible Lady Linn, delivered something more intimate: a stripped-back, analog gem full of warmth, longing, and soul.

Fast-forward to now, over a decade later, and Can We Try is getting a new life. Lovingly remastered and reissued on Freerange Records, the track returns with heavyweight remixes from Jimpster, Ben Hixon, and Deetron, each bringing their own flavor while keeping the emotional pulse of the original alive.
In this Dirty Disco Track Talk, I sat down with FCL to look back at where it all began: the inspirations that shaped the song, their deep connection to house history, and why tracks like Can We Try prove that real dance music doesn’t need to shout, it just needs to move you.
Should one really have to explain why this song is so special? We think not, so let’s just listen and enjoy.
There can be no talk of (deep) house music without mentioning Larry Heard aka Mr Fingers. Groove, emotion, power, it’s all there.
Vocal house gold and a groove to die for. This was a staple track for years in our sets and of course we included it in our FCL In The House compilation on Defected.
The very first FCL thing. True to form we left nearly nothing of the original and just jammed around the idea of ‘Highway’. I guess raw & dusted are the key words here.
House didn’t just ‘happen’. It rose through the ranks of disco, boogie and more. This one here has all the ingredients we are looking for in a song.
Stone cold Chicago classic that was also huge in the late 80’s Belgian new beat scene. An eternal inspiration.
More Louie Vega please! In the vast body of work of this New York music master this one is a stand out for us.
Detroit 313 love for ever. The amount of original music coming out of this city is simply ridiculous. Here’s a gem few people play, but more people should.
We have a side project/label called ‘Club Belgique’ to pay tribute to the rich Belgian electronic music history that is often ignored because us Belgians are crap at being loud and proud. We plan to change that!
The follow-up track to our ‘It’s You’ classic, which in actuality was the predecessor, but it just happened otherwise. This one could only have happened because of the influences and inspirations of all three people involved. Because when it comes to FCL it’s not just about San Soda and I, Red D, but also about the phenomenal talent that is Lady Linn.
A big thank you to FCL for joining me in this Track Talk and sharing the story behind Can We Try. It is always special to hear how a track with so much emotion and history can still sound fresh today.
The Can We Try (Remixes EP) is out now on Freerange Records, featuring new versions from Jimpster, Ben Hixon, and Deetron. Each remix adds something unique while keeping the original soul alive.
If you want to dive deeper into FCL’s journey and discover the ten tracks that shaped their sound, check out podcast episode 618 with music from FCL in the mix. You will also find more interviews, music reviews, and mixes here on the website.
Until next time, keep listening, keep digging, and keep the groove alive.
