Let me tell you something straight from the booth, this record is something special. As a DJ, selector, and eternal lover of soul-drenched house music, few things make me light up like a release that blends message, musicality, and movement. Gene Siewing “I’ve Been Blessed” ticks all those boxes and then some.
Gene isn’t new to the game, not by a long shot. He’s been sculpting emotionally charged house cuts for years, and his Intent Recordings label has become one of those boutique outlets I always keep an eye on. There’s something undeniably human about his music. It’s house music, yes, but with layers: jazz, gospel, groove, sincerity. This latest outing, catalog number 009, delivers exactly that warmth and complexity with his usual flair.
Right out of the gate, the title track “I’ve Been Blessed” wraps around you like the first sunbeam after a long night. Ingrid Arthur, yes, that Ingrid Arthur from The Weather Girls and gospel royalty, steps in with a vocal performance that gave me full-body goosebumps. Her spoken intro about sharing a treasure with people she’s never met? That’s a mood. That’s the dancefloor. That’s why we do what we do.
Then the 100% Gospel Choir joins in with the refrain “I’ve been blessed,” and from there it’s pure magic. Soulful keys, silky pads, soft percussion that flows like honey, it’s a groove you feel, not just hear. The whole thing plays out like a spiritual, on vinyl, in the club, under a disco ball.
The EP isn’t just a one-track wonder. The “Luv 2 Do” mix pulls things into peak-time territory with a 4×4 rhythm that breathes. There’s space here, you can feel the air between the claps, the synths teasing in and out, and Ingrid’s vocals drifting like affirmations over a steady beat. This one is for the heads who like their message served with a touch of restraint and dancefloor drive.
Then there’s the “Saxy Dub”, and let me say, Fuasi Abdul-Khaliq’s saxophone work here is absolutely gorgeous. It’s funky, sharp, but smooth in all the right ways. Like a jam session at sunset in Rio. The dub version adds a bit more spice, gives it bounce, and wraps up the EP on a euphoric high. It’s the kind of track that makes you miss your train because you’re dancing on the platform.
In a world full of disposable loops and forgettable drops, “Gene Siewing I’ve Been Blessed” stands out because it feels intentional (no pun intended). Gene Siewing knows how to touch people through frequencies, and with Ingrid Arthur’s soul on board, this EP becomes something greater than the sum of its parts.
I’ll be spinning this in Dirty Disco episodes all summer long, and trust me, when you drop that gospel refrain mid-set, it hits different. Not just another track, but a moment. A reminder of why we gather around music in the first place.
So yeah… we’ve been blessed, with real music, made with love.
