Gratts is about to release ‘Rhythms, Tales & Instrumentation’ on London’s Wolf Music Recordings. An experienced DJ and producer who has worked with the likes of Alex Kassian, Robert Owens, Nathan Haines and many more. His new EP is an accomplished collection of soulful future house classics that we love. We talk to the Belgian born, Adelaide based artist about his aspirations and dreams.
1. Did you ever dream when you were a kid that you would be doing what you’re doing today?
As a little boy, I think my Lego constructions inspired me to become an architect. When I heard a certain Coldcut record aged 13 and started buying records a couple of years later, there was no way back, though. Underground dance music had sucked me in forever.
2. What is your dream event to play at?
A party that goes on for many days and nights, on a small tropical island. Everyone on the bill plays a very long set. My whole record collection would somehow be there, in the dj-booth. Nice people only, free (quality) cheekies upon arrival.
3. What would be your dream gig to attend and why?
Seeing Prodigy live again, with Keith still there.
4. What is your dream studio setup?
I’m not really a big gearslut. It’s all about the ideas, I work quite conceptually rather than twist knobs all day. Having said that, please throw in a whole heap of incredibly expensive mics, a few classic drum machines and synths and that’ll do. Thanks.
5. What artist, past or present, would be your dream collaboration?
7. If you were not a DJ and producer, what would be your dream job?
Scientist.
8. In your wildest dreams what would be your perfect party starter?
Massaging people’s ears for hours on the most incredible sound system.
9. What is your dream sunset tune?
It has to be Wamdue Project’s ‘Memory & Forgetting’.
10. Name a record you love with the word ‘dream’ in it?
So many to choose from. A tie between Count Bass-E – It’s Only A Dream, Ananda Project – Moment Before Dreaming (Idjut Boys Rmx I), Derrick L. Carter – Dreaming Again and K-Klass – Dream. (There go a few of my dollar bin secret weapons.)
A few final words.
As we draw our discussion to a close, we are left with an enriched understanding of the profound depth that lies beneath Gratts‘ magnetic persona and his infectious melodies. A multi-faceted artist whose dreams have shaped his journey in more ways than one.
