Interview with Heritage Listed.
How has your relocation from Sydney to Europe influenced your music and creative process?
I think it’s definitely made me go a lot more disco and funk. I think the music I produced living in South America and Australia was a bit all over the place, but I feel Europe has made me refine my sound a lot.
How do you go about creating such a seamless blend of funk, jazz, disco, and house elements in your tracks?
Focusing on organic instruments first, inspired by these genres, always helps me blend it together. I usually produce drums first, then lay down an idea once i’m happy with it. This process i find helps everything gel together.
Can you share the story behind the creation of “Airport Jazz” and “Cookies and Cream”? What inspired them?
Yes! During COVID, I lived in this crazy building that used to be a hostel in Melbourne, and I built a studio in a spare room there. By pure luck, i had a roommate, one of the most talented musicians I’ve ever met, a guy from the UK named Will. He and I would jam and produce a lot together, and largely thanks to him, those are the two best tracks that came out of that wonderful, crazy time.
What vision do you and Le Hutin have for Basics Recording in the coming years?
I would love to grow the label to a point where we are doing label showcase events all across Europe (and the world), guesting DJs and producers we admire and putting on amazing parties. On the music side, more compilation vinyls and digital releases for sure!
What was the inspiration behind your upcoming disco anthem, Where We Belong?
I wrote this one after moving away from Barcelona, when i was bouncing around without a fixed address or direction. It’s a cliche, but I kind of realised as chaotic as shit was, home was where my heart was and I was happy with how life was going. That’s when I wrote this track.
How did your collaboration with Singtrace for Where We Belong come about?
My friend had found her on the internet and recommended her to me, as I was looking for someone who could sing super soulful, almost diva house vocals. I looked at her work, and I knew straight away that it was on. I wrote to her, and I couldn’t be happier with how it went.
What has been your most memorable live performance so far, and what made it so special?
I was playing in Paris earlier this year at 211, a nice, intimate venue in the 19th. The energy of the people there was just insane, real passionate and i felt like i could really play what I wanted. It reminded me why i do this, and it was a beautiful experience all round.
How has your sound evolved from your earlier releases to your latest works, including Where We Belong?
I think when i started i was really trying to find out exactly what i wanted to do with this project. I knew i wanted to make house, but i didn’t really have a clear idea in mind. Now i feel like I definitely have a style, and that makes me feel it can only evolve from there.
How have artists like Harvey Sutherland, Folamour, and Tatsuro Yamashita influenced your production style?
More than anything, i feel the common ground between these artists and why i love them so much, is that i feel happy listening to their tracks. They have wildly different styles, but their music is just lifts me up, whatever mood im in. I try more than anything to emulate that with my production
What role do you see vinyl playing in the future of house music and for Basics Recording?
Vinyl is having a resurgence right now, isn’t it? I mean it’s been coming back for a while, but i’ve been seeing some incredible DJs coming out of the woodwork with vinyl mixes. So i think it’s here to stay, and i think the culture can only evolve. At Basics, our goal is to release 1-2 compilation vinyls a year, and more if possible for EPs.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Quincy Jones, hands down.
How does the house music scene in Europe differ from that in Australia, in your opinion?
I think house music in Europe is much more diverse than Australia, due to simply having many more countries. You have a ton of different scenes with different things that pop in house. In Australia, there is an incredible amount of talent, but due to limited venues and spaces by comparison, the scenes are not as big.
I moved here because I think there are many more opportunities in the long term for the type of music I do than in Australia. But I do miss the music scene at times over there.
Do you approach creating music differently from performing it live? How do you balance being both a producer and a DJ?
Yes absolutely. Performing live its always about the other people you’re sharing the space with, the energy of the room, so on. Creating music, i think i can really take my time with it and get lost in the track, while playing live i always getting lost in the moment is the best thing.
What steps are you taking to achieve your long-term goals, such as writing an album and playing in epic venues?
I’ve just invested in a studio space here in Amsterdam, to go deep on production. Fingers crossed, something comes out of that haha. On the venue side, every day on both the label and individual side, immerse myself in the scene, reaching out, and connecting as much as possible. I have a good feeling consistently doing these two things, I’ll get there eventually.
How do you ensure your music resonates deeply with listeners around the world, creating uplifting and soulful tracks?
Honestly, just making the music that i want to make. if i’m in the studio and the music makes me feel something, whether that is dancing like crazy, nodding my head or stank face, i know it’s on the right track.
If you could only listen to one disco track on repeat for a 24-hour DJ set, which one would you pick, and how long before you’d lose your mind?
Probably Operator by Dj Koze. I never get sick of that track! Give me a solid couple of hours, but who knows. it could be all night.
Thank you.
