Hey, Dirty Disco family! Kono here, ready to take you on another deep dive into the sounds that shape some of the most innovative artists out there. Today, we’re sitting down with the incredibly talented Joi N’Juno, also known as David Baluteau. For over 25 years, he made waves as the founder, composer, and lead singer of the French drum & bass-electro-punk band La Phaze. After wrapping up an epic two-year tour with the band, David has turned his creative energy toward a new project, one that’s funky, fresh, and bursting with maturity. Enter Samemala, Joi N’Juno’s debut solo album on the Portuguese-based Canopy label. A genre-blending masterpiece, Samemala draws from 70s and 80s disco, Zouk boogie, and Afro Funk, with slick modern disco-house vibes that scream for the dance floor.
In this edition of ‘Ten Tracks That Made Me,’ Joi N’Juno takes us through the musical moments that shaped his journey, from his childhood revelations to the evolution of his unmistakable sound. So, whether you’re a fan of his past work with La Phaze or you’re discovering him for the first time, get ready for an in-depth look at the influences behind his incredible new album.
My mother bought the live album of Toure Kunda when it was released in the 80s.This is one of the biggest musical revelations of my childhood. The energy, the musicians, the vibes…everything is there! My love for performing live has certainly started there.
This song was a massive hit in Europe, it has a deep meaning to me as I was taking music classes in a small office upstairs in a cafe-restaurant in France. People often played that track on the jukebox. Each time I hear it these days I go instantly back in time!
I was really into Punk-rock, The Clash opened a new era. Their album Sandinista was saying to the face of the world, you can break the barriers there’s no more genre. It’s a risky record of a band at his best, with experimentation, attitude and freedom.
A very interesting band that also played a role in my musical education.
I have always tried to explore different universes in terms of music, it’s like travelling and discovering new culture. I am pretty suspicious with people who are trying to put music into boxes.
That track was played a lot on Radio Nova back in the days, it has a very special meaning because I was living in Paris and struggling with my music as a young artist. I think this remix still sounds fresh and incredibly soulful.
Excellent record of the band with a young Lionel Richie:)
I just love the funk, the beat, and the production. Automatic funky weapon!
Ebo taylor is definitely the Highlife maestro, his production is impressive.
He’s a unique composer and guitarist who has blended his jazz and African influences with a new definition of Funk and Afrobeat.
I was lucky enough to work with Mama Rose the Queen of Calypso in 2016, for her successful album « Far From Home ».Being on tour and in studio with her was a turnover, she taught me that age is nothing when you truly have a message to deliver.
Early 2000 UK House vibe, this track is quite underrated to me. I love the progression of the track, the bass and the minimal elements.
This is the first single of my new record. Samemala is the inner joy of a child. I have received a great support since it’s been out and it will be released again on Guts new compilation in December 2024.
And there you have it, Joi N’Juno’s personal musical influences that have led him to this exciting moment with Samemala. It’s clear that his love for blending genres and pushing boundaries has given birth to something truly special. Make sure to give the album a listen; you’ll find everything from funky grooves to soulful melodies, perfect for any vibe. A massive thank you to Joi N’Juno for sharing his story with us! And remember, Samemala is out now on Canopy Records, so be sure to check it out and get ready to dance. Stay tuned for more Dirty Disco goodness, and as always, keep it groovy!
