There’s something beautifully eccentric about Norway’s electronic music scene, and Lakeshouse capture that spirit like few others. Hailing from Oslo, this collective of producers, DJs, and jazz musicians has been cooking up their unique brand of dancefloor mischief for years. Rooted in the city’s rich history of house, space disco and that unmistakable sense of Nordic oddness, Lakeshouse sound like a band in love with both the past and the future of dance music.

Their latest single ‘Renate’s Dans’ is a prime example. A genre-bending slice of elastic basslines, playful 303’s, shimmering synths, and a big nod to Italo, techno and house, all delivered with impeccable production and a wink. You might have already heard me spin this gem in Dirty Disco 606, where it lit up the mix with its off-kilter energy and modern disco flair.

Lakeshouse track talk

Behind Lakeshouse is a shared history of friendship, creativity, and a love for music that runs deep. Growing up together, they spent countless hours soundtracking their lives with Beastie Boys, Faithless, and The Prodigy, while drawing sprawling imaginary worlds across living room floors. It’s this playful, boundaryless creativity that still drives them today, blending influences from jazz to hyperpop into music that feels warm, weird, and utterly danceable.

In this Dirty Disco Track Talk, Lakeshouse share the 10 tracks that shaped their musical universe, from Kylie Minogue’s ‘Slow’ to jazz legend Bill Evans. These picks reveal a lot about their eclectic DNA and what fuels their futuristic yet nostalgic sound.

Kylie Minogue – Slow

Probably one of the greatest pop songs of the 2000’s. The simple Kraftwerk inspired beat over Kylie’s vocal is pure bliss. The remix by Chemical Brothers is also fire.

Bent – Moonbeams

We grew up on Bent’s first two records. They are masters of conveying limerence and bitter-sweet feelings. This track is one of our favourites. Cozy, cute and harmonious. The steel guitar is amazing, and Bent might be responsible for our love of that instrument.

Two Shell – Mirror

Two Shell are incredible. They have a unique and inspiring sound that effortlessly blends humor and sincerity in a way we really admire. They have a lot in common with the hyperpop-scene: A certain tongue-in-cheek vibe and forward thinking approach that is uncompromising yet really appealing. That vibe is very similar to Mietze Conte, Jockstrap or even Kero Kero Bonito in some ways. It’s interesting to keep tabs on the post-post modern acts out there, and we can’t help but be inspired by them.

Animal Collective – Ahhh Good Country

Danse Manatee is a classic record to us that we regularly listened to out in the woods as teenagers. With nothing but beer in our system it was still a transformative and psychedelic experience to listen to. They seem to have direct access to the sublime, the transcendental, and the inner child. Ahhh Good Country builds like a techno track. It takes its time, puts you into a trance, and it really delivers.

Cashmere Cat – Europa Pools

The whole 9-album is a masterpiece. Cashmere Cat is one of Norway’s most underrated producers in our humble opinion. We could have picked any number of songs from that album, but this song sums up the key aspects: Intense, sincere emotions, top-notch singers, and just astounding production. If you’re a fan of electronic music or pop, this is worth checking out.

Mr. Tophat – Time Lapse

The swedes must have something strange in their drinking water because they have so many incredible artists, producers and songwriters. All of the tracks on Dusk to Dawn pt 2 are absolute bangers. Noomi’s vocals on this track are just bliss. We would love to work with a singer with that type of voice and attitude. Mr. Tophat is a genius and we really hope he keeps giving us his unique vision of music.

Chemical Brothers – It doesn’t matter

Dig Your Own Hole is a certified classic. Endre bought this on CD when he was just 8 after hearing Block Rockin’ Beats on Topp 20 (The Norwegian equivalent to Top of The Pops), and we must have listened to this record a couple hundred times at least. The Brothers, The Prodigy and Faithless really left a mark on our young, impressionable minds. They might be the reason we decided that maybe electronic music could be for us rather than playing in bands.

Beastie Boys – Instant Death

Hello Nasty was another one of those albums of our childhoods. We’d listen to it so much that we knew every rhyme, every drumhit, every nuance of the production like the back of our hands. It was the soundtrack to many hours spent on the living room floor where we were busy drawing a massive, imaginative theme-park (We’d played Theme Park World on an older brother’s computer), on large pieces of paper we taped together to never run out of room for our ideas. Even though the album is pretty long, we still wished it was a little longer when this track came on and we knew we’d have to get up and work the CD-player again, usually starting the album from the top.

The Avalanches – Slow walking

We simply adore The Avalanches. We adore them so much that we probably wouldn’t be the people we are today without them. Since I Left You (The absolute classic of classics) was of course our first run-in with their music, but not too long after we came across Slow Walking and were blown away. The simplicity of it, the naive lyrics, the singer on the verge of laughing, the way it starts off so eerie and strange but blooms into a wonderful technicolor world, it’s just one of those songs that will stay with you forever.

Bill Evans & Jim Hall – My Funny Valentine

Their collaboration album is absolutely gorgeous. These two musicians really understand each other. The record makes it feel like you are listening to a conversation between a piano and a guitar. Like two friends having a profound conversation. Our debut album is very inspired by lots of jazz and maybe especially Bill Evans.
