Although opened quite recently (in 2017), London’s Printworks has quickly gained a very solid reputation among clubs around the world. Thanks to its programming of the best and most legendary world renown artists and DJ’s, the East London venue has indeed all the biggest artists in the world, from Eric Prydz to Bicep, Kerri Chandler and hundreds of others.

But also and above all thanks to its atypical configuration of a long warehouse which gives a really unique atmosphere to the place, with a capacity of 6000 clubbers. Qualities which allowed it to be in the Top 10 of the world’s best clubs in the DJ Mag ranking (at the 7th place), and it was obviously totally deserved. A place that became iconic in a very short time. But also a place that will soon have to be referred to in the past tense unfortunately.
Losing this much appreciated place would be a heartbreaker. Several reports reveal that London has lost almost a quarter of its clubs since the beginning of the pandemic. There are currently 198 venues operating as nightclubs in the capital, the smallest number since the mid-1990s. Industry leaders fear that London is losing its reputation as a major clubbing capital.
Despite a petition that gathered 10,000 signatures, it was indeed decided on July 11 during a meeting of the Southwark District Council that the place would be partially destroyed to make way for offices and stores. This new 45,000 square meter space is intended to create about 3,000 new jobs. This news is not really a surprise though, since the opening of Printworks it had been planned that the club would only operate the premises temporarily. A big transformation plan of the Canada Water area where the club is located has been in the pipeline for several years.
However, a new adventure will start in October for the team behind Printworks, which is planning to launch a new club project, “The Beams“, in once again a very warehouse-like atmosphere.
