The Dirty Disco blog is proud to present its full electronic music review of the Lovebirds ft. Declan McDermott – Mar-A-Lago EP. After his other release on Teardrops, this latest release from Australian but Berlin living producer Sebastian Döring (aka Lovebirds) and Irish multi-instrumentalist Declan McDermott is a sublime journey into 70s inspired soulful house music. The title track, ‘Mar-A-Lago Sunset Theme’ was written and recorded in a single hour session on a late Friday night, and it’s easy to hear the natural flow and vibes that came from that magical moment in the studio.

Where and how did the magic start?

When Lovebirds, aka Sebastian Döring, wanted to sell his Studer console a few years back he had no idea how much this opportunity would change his music career! After meeting Declan McDermott and discovering all the musical skills the multi-instrumentalist from Sydney possessed (guitar, bass, keys, vocals and even drums and percussion!). They went on to enjoy an incredible number of studio sessions together. Since 2017 Declan has been making waves in Berlin as his skills as a musician have taken him places he could have only dreamed of, who’d have known when that old Studer console first came up for sale it was the beginning of such an amazing music journey!

Lovebirds – Mar-A-Lago (Ft Declan McDermott).

The collaborative masterpiece that is ‘Mar-A-Lago Sunset Theme’ came to life in the most delightful way at the very end of a long Friday night studio session. Much like how all good things happen when least expected, it began to slowly take shape right before their eyes and soon enough, they were dancing along as if in a trance. It’s an infectious blend of mid-’70s up-tempo soul topped with a feathery bassline and layered with funkadelic rhythms, bringing to mind beloved musical icons such as Azymuth mixed with Patrice Rushen. And don’t forget the unbeatable final touch. That vintage Fender Rhodes lick with the perfect amount of tape delay. In short, you can bet it’ll be impossible not to groove to this marvelous concoction!

Great Ocean Road.

The ‘Great Ocean Road’ is a fusion of Americana and a soulful gem. With acoustic guitar, Rhodes, bass and synths working in harmony. The song then moves into an inspired breakdown which brings something entirely new to the table. Black Loops joins the party every time with his impeccable drumming skills enhancing things even further. On top of this, you get that unmistakable sexy disco bassline followed by more synth ruminations and yes, plenty of Roland Space Echo! Who could ask for anything more?

Final words.

Lovebirds and Declan McDemott are turning heads with the release of their smooth new collaboration. Fans of the duo have been clamoring for a new release and now their dreams have come true! After months in the recording studio, this first taste of what’s to come is sure to leave you wanting more. Get ready for even more amazing sounds in 2023 from this unmistakeable team effort.
