Welcome to another exciting edition of Track Talk! I’m thrilled to introduce you to Magic Words, the dynamic duo from New York consisting of Eli Cohen and Peter Hargarten. Their latest project, Wabi Soba, marks their debut on Razor-N-Tape, and it’s already making waves. Supported by the legendary DJ Harvey, their track is a perfect blend of Balearic vibes, Spanish guitar, and melancholic harmonies. Today, they are here to share with us ten tracks that have significantly influenced their musical journey. Let’s dive in and explore the sounds that have shaped Magic Words.

Wabi Soba - Magic Words Razor N Tape

Here we ask Magic Words to take us through ten tracks that have made a mark on their musical world.

1. Chas Jankel – Number One

The name alone kinda lends itself to a top ten list doesn’t it?  This track provides endless ambition and encouragement in the studio.

2. Carly Simon – Why

Not sure if Carly is dancing around UES or UWS, but this is when Manhattan may just have been the center of the world. Disgusting Chic production with one of the sickest basslines ever.

3. Mercy Mercy – What are you gonna do about it

This is one of the first tracks we bonded over.  Epically smooth, forever fresh.

4. Greeen Linez – Hibiscus Pacific

Eli: I was so blown away by this song that I started a record label (Alliance Upholstery) just so I could release it on vinyl. The video makes me feel nostalgic for a time that I either missed or never existed.

5. Demis Roussos – I Dig You

Peter: Human Head Records in Brooklyn used to have a sale every summer where they took thousands of records outside, and sold them for a quarter each. Eli pulled this and told me I needed it. He was right.

6. Jolley & Swain – Soul Street

An all-time duo at the peak of their powers. If Jordan and Pippen made a dance record it still might not have sounded this good. On repeat forever.

7. Wink – Samishii Nettaigyo (淋しい熱帯魚)

Eli: I lived in Japan for about 4 years in the 00’s. This is what was playing in my head the whole time, whether I knew it or not.

8. Fun Fun – Happy Station

Eli: This was one of the first Italo disco records I ever bought and acted as a NorthStar as I desperately searched for anything else that had this sound and aesthetic.

9. The Limit – Destiny

Peter: Whole record slaps. This is a killer love song with a shredding solo. Love everything about it.

10: Magic Words – Wabi Soba (Jex Opolis Remix)

Jex’s mix of the title track of our debut EP.  He takes the original, buys it a gym membership, makes sure it never skips the post workout protein shake and gives it a gift certificate to Cindy’s Spray Tans (just in case). The results speak for themselves.

End conclusion
