Welcome to an exclusive edition of our track talk, where we delve into the music and moments that have shaped the career of a true luminary in the DJ world, Natasha Kitty Katt. Known as the “Intergalactic Disco Vampire,” Natasha is far more than just a DJ and producer; she’s a visionary artist who has carved out a unique space in the global music scene. With a sound that blends the timeless grooves of disco with the futuristic flair of house and electronic music, Natasha has captivated audiences from Ibiza to New York, and everywhere in between.
Natasha’s journey began in a household where music wasn’t just background noise, but a way of life. Influenced by her father, a dedicated rare vinyl collector, she was immersed in the sounds of Northern Soul, Funk, and Disco from an early age. This deep-rooted connection to music laid the foundation for a career that has seen her headline at some of the world’s most iconic venues, including London’s Ministry of Sound and New York’s House of Yes.
In this conversation, Natasha takes us on a personal tour through the tracks that have defined her path as an artist. These are the songs that not only resonate with her but have also played pivotal roles in her evolution as one of the most enigmatic figures in electronic music today. From the energy-infused beats of Ashford & Simpson to the soul-stirring melodies of Patrice Holloway, each track is a chapter in the story of a DJ who has mastered the art of connecting with audiences through sound.
Join us as we dive deep into Natasha’s musical universe and explore the tracks that have been the soundtrack to her extraordinary journey through the world of dance music.
1. Ashford & Simpson – Found A Cure
“Found a Cure” by Ashford & Simpson holds a special place in my heart as it was one of the first records I ever spun at the start of my DJ career. I vividly remember playing it in a bar and seeing someone at the back of the room go absolutely wild (in the best way possible!) when the needle hit the groove. This track perfectly captures Ashford & Simpson at their finest infectious, uplifting, and bursting with energy. It will always remind me of the early days of my DJ journey and the joy of connecting with an audience through music.
2. Patrice Holloway – Stolen Hours
Northern Soul is dear to me, and this track is one of my all-time favourites. My father played a huge role in shaping my DJ career, I wouldn’t be where I am today without him, and that’s a fact. Growing up, our house was constantly filled with the sounds of Northern and Modern Soul records. My father, a dedicated rare vinyl collector, was the one who taught me how to DJ. This particular tune stands out for its sweet, soulful vocals and haunting melodies. The real beauty lies in the raw emotions you can feel pouring out as the song is sung.
3. Don Ray – Standing’ In The Rain
“Standing In The Rain” is a track that instantly transports me to countless moments across the globe. Whether it was spinning at the Ministry of Sound in London, vibing with the energy of New York, or setting the mood in the vibrant nightlife of Hong Kong, this track has been a constant companion. It’s more than just a song, it’s a time machine that brings back memories of the electric connection between the music and the crowd. The atmosphere it creates is truly unique, enveloping the dance floor in a wave of emotion and energy that’s impossible to replicate. The track’s atmospheric quality has a way of elevating the entire room, making every spin feel like a shared experience between the DJ and the dancers. Every time I drop it, I can feel the anticipation and excitement ripple through the crowd, as if we’re all about to embark on a journey together. “Standing In The Rain” is a testament to the power of music to transcend time and place, creating unforgettable moments that linger long after the last beat fades away.
4. Cerrone – Supernature
It would be impossible to compile a list of songs that have shaped my career without including Cerrone’s iconic hit, “Supernature.” This track is more than just a staple in my DJ sets; it’s a reflection of who I am as an artist. “Supernature” perfectly encapsulates so many elements of my musical identity. The way it seamlessly blends electronic disco with eerie, otherworldly themes speaks to my love for the supernatural and my passion for pushing the boundaries of sound.
Cerrone’s work on “Supernature” has been a massive influence on my own production journey. His ability to create music that is not only danceable but also deeply atmospheric and conceptually rich is something I’ve always admired and strived to emulate in my own tracks. There’s a certain magic in the way he crafts his music, mixing pulsing rhythms with haunting synth lines and enigmatic vocals—that has always resonated with me.
5. Loleatta Holloway – Dreamin’
This track holds a special place in my heart, as it was one of the very first 7-inch records I bought when I decided to embark on my DJing journey. I picked it up during a trip to New York for my 21st birthday, marking a pivotal moment in my life, the beginning of my career as a DJ. Growing up, this record was always spinning in my house, thanks to my parents’ influence. It’s more than just a song; it’s a bridge between my childhood and the start of my passion for music. Loleatta Holloway was truly one-of-a-kind, and for me, this track is her masterpiece, a timeless reminder of where I started and the love for music that has shaped my path ever since.
6. Terry Callier – I Don’t Want To See Myself (Without You)
Every time I hear that sax intro and the opening lyrics, “I don’t want to see… myself,” I’m instantly transported back to my Southport Weekender debut at the Suncebeat Dome. At the time, I had no idea that moment would be the catalyst for my journey as an international DJ, elevating my career to new heights. Picture this: a packed-out venue, the crowd singing every word back to you, and you’re spinning one of your all-time favorite tracks. That’s the magic this song holds for me. Terry Callier was a beautiful genius, and this track is a shining testament to his unparalleled artistry. It’s a song that doesn’t just play; it resonates, capturing a moment in time that forever changed my path.
7. Fouk – Cat Lady
Another track that I spun at my Southport Weekender debut, I think this track is the perfect ‘House’ number. Notice the song title? I wonder why that would resonate with me…
8. Nighttime Fantasy – Vicki Sue Robinson
“Nighttime Fantasy” is a track that perfectly captures the essence of nightlife, something I’ve experienced countless times, especially at New York’s iconic House of Yes. For me, this song embodies everything I love about disco and why I’m so passionate about what I do. It’s disco at its finest, with an added allure, as it’s part of the soundtrack to Nocturna, a vampire-themed disco movie (no wonder I’m obsessed). I even used the Nocturna album cover, with its striking red lips and massive fangs, for a photoshoot.
9. C.O.M.B.i – I Found Morning
As a devoted fan of the original, C.O.M.B.i’s (Eric Duncan) remix of Debbie Jacobs’ High on Your Love is nothing short of breathtaking. This track has become a staple in my record bag, effortlessly igniting dance floors across the globe. It’s pure euphoria. The moment that thumping bassline kicks in, I’m transported straight to my happy place, and I can see it does the same for everyone else on the dancefloor. This mix takes the original to new heights, making it an absolute essential for any set.
10. Daniele Baldelli – Funk Me Again (Eric Dunks Duncan mix)
Daniele Baldelli is nothing short of a legend in my eyes. His innovative DJing and production style have always struck a chord with me, resonating on a level that’s hard to put into words. Baldelli has this uncanny ability to create a symbiotic harmony between funk and electronic music, blending them in a way that feels almost spiritual to me. It’s like he’s speaking directly to my soul with every beat.
This particular remix by Eric Dunks is genius, it’s deep, moody, and yet it pulses with the raw, infectious energy of funk. It’s a track that not only moves the dancefloor but also stirs something profound within me. To say it’s killer is an understatement; it’s a masterpiece that captures the essence of what I love most about music.
