Next up on Ravanelli Disco Club comes slick French duo Palavas who hail from the sun-drenched coast of the South of France, somewhere between Montpellier and Marseille. Named after the Pavalas resort – that was once the splendid queen of Mediterranean sandy beaches – the AZZUR Records founders are the epitome of the French dolce vita! With previous releases on Toucan Sound and Future Disco, their music is an intoxicating blend of nostalgia and cosmic futurism that dazzles discerning dancefloors every weekend with their shimmering solar odyssey.
On the week they release their much anticipated long player ‘Déesse D’été’ , we ask Palavas to highlight ten tracks that serve as milestones on their musical journey
Thelma Houston – I Need Someone Tonight (Palavas Remix)
This track is probably the one we have played the most. We have sold 500 copies of the vinyl and it has been supported by Gilles Peterson which is kind of a big achievement for us!
Emmanuel Jal & Nyaruach – Ti Chuong (Musumeci Supernatural Remix)
The ultimate disco track for us. I remember when my partner Guilhem played it for the very first time during a party at Sisyphos in Berlin. The sun was rising and the energy on the dance floor was at it’s climax. Our friend Musumeci just killed it with this remix.
Duke – So In Love With You (Gummihz Edit)
This is the perfect closing track. I remember Gummihz playing it during OFF Sonar in 2012 in Barcelona during a rooftop party. We like music that creates memories, and this is a track you can’t forget.
Todd Terje – Strandbar (Disko Version)
Palavas was founded at a time where Guilhem and I were resident at the La dame Noir in Marseille. This club was the home of slow disco music and has welcomed the best DJs of the world. We have so many good memories at this club, and we came up with the idea of creating a brand-new project together ‘Palavas’.
‘Strandbar’ was one of our favorite tracks to play at this place. This piano makes people so enthusiastic.
Palavas – You Can’t Get Away (Prins Thomas Diskomiks)
This is the first single of our album that we have released a few weeks ago. Prins Thomas is a true legend for us and having him on board for a remix is such a big achievement for us.
Anoraak – Gang feat. Sarah Maison
Gang is the perfect song to start a DJ set. Anoraak is a good friend of ours and has played guitars and bass on some of the tracks of our album. We like to collaborate with friends. On the album more than 10 friends have been involved!
Roy Ayers Ubiquity – Everybody Loves The Sunshine
We like to call ourselves a Mediterranean disco duo. I live in Marseille and Konvex in Montpellier. I think that you can feel it in our music that we live by the sea. ‘Everybody Loves the Sunshine’ is the kind of anthem that we like to listen to. There is something magic in this track and it’s a clear reference for us.
Last week we have done a release party for our album on a boat. We have presented a new hybrid set where Guilhem is now singing live. We have played this track and people went totally crazy. What a fantastic memory.
Palavas – I Know You Want
This is the first Palavas song that we have created. Sampling is part of our identity, we like to use old songs to create new ones. Laurent Garnier once said in an interview – all DJs and producers are kleptomaniacs. I think he is super true!
Martin Solveig, Salif Keita – Madan
We are very open musically. We don’t like « niche » DJs that refuse to play certain songs because they have gained a popular success. This track from Martin Solveig has became a classic track of pop culture and also a classic of our sets.
Our end conclusion.
We hope this riveting expedition through Palavas’ milestone tracks has shed light on the dynamic duo’s growth and inspiration in their musical journey. From the very first remix to their latest release, their discography serves as a testament to their unique blend of nostalgia and cosmic futurism. Make sure to listen to these handpicked tracks and immerse yourself in the sonic ambiance they’ve painstakingly crafted. Stay tuned for more from Palavas and don’t forget to support their recent album ‘Déesse D’été‘. We thank you for your time and look forward to seeing you on the dance floor!
