Hey everyone! I’m thrilled to introduce you to an artist whose work is a dynamic blend of cultural influences and innovative sounds. Prince of Queens, also known as Felipe Quiroz. Born in Colombia and raised in New York, Felipe has a unique talent for synthesizing trans-Caribbean rhythms with the pulse of house and techno. His latest release, the ‘Merida EP’ on Razor-N-Tape, is a sonic journey through vintage tropical vibes and modern electronic beats. Join me as we dive deep into the ten tracks that have shaped this incredible artist’s musical evolution.
Ticklah – Ticklah Vs. Axelrod (2007)
After moving to New York, I got really deep into reggae and dub in High School. This record came right after I graduated High School, and I remember it was one of the first records I bought on itunes. I listened to it a lot! Me and my friends just wanted to smoke weed and do dub! Funny thing is, more than 10 years later I met Victor (Ticklah) and we work together on music with my band Combo Chimbita and we DJ together too. Love you Vic!
François K – Hypnodelic (1995)
Ok this one is more than just about this one track. By the time I was in college I was already starting to produce my own music and getting really into deep house and techno and the underground scene. My friend Keita once took me to the club Cielo on a Monday night for Deep Space, François K’s party, and it completely changed my life.
At the time was a like 22, I was super broke and undocumented but I knew that I could go to Cielo on Monday, with my printed flyer at 10 pm and get in for free, and get 1 hour of drinks for free and literally have the best time of my life, with amazing sound, the deepest music and some of the best DJa in the world as guests. Deep Space and FK FOREVER!
Tabou Combo – New york City (1975)
Around 2010 I started DJing and buying records. I was playing with Colombian immigrant band MAKU Soundsystem, and I was getting really into old tropical music and I kept finding all these Haitian records in thrift stores around the city. I totally fell in love with Kompa, I don’t really understand any of the lyrics but musically it blew me away. The tenacity and laser focus delivery of every single element and the depth of each song, I had never heard anything like that before. This one particular record is special, it felt like a revelation to me
Dj Rolando AKA The Aztec Mystic – Jaguar (2000)
In 2011 my friend Thomas took me to Detroit for the first time for DEMF. I saw so many incredible DJ sets, we went to Submerge, Underground Resistance, and it all just clicked!
I realized where all this great music comes from. It’s been black people and Latinos, who have made the dance music I’ve loved all along. After that trip, my understanding of dance music changed forever.
D-Train – Keep On Extended Version – 1982
In 2012, my friends Thomas Fitzpatrick and Eric Escobar took me to The Loft for the first time. David Macunso was already retiring by then, but Douglas Sherman was taking on the tradition. I had never seen or been to a party like that. The depth of the music, the diversity of the crowd, young, old, everything!
I remember hearing this song there and feeling completely overwhelmed with joy, it made me cry. I realized this music can save and change lives! I left a different person, between Detroit and The Loft, I knew dance music would be part of me forever. There is NO WAY BACK!
Combo Chimbita – Ahoma / Brillo (2019)
All these years, I had been working on my own dance music as Prince of Queens, but parallelly, I had been playing with bands.
By 2018 we had started Combo Chimbita, with whom I still play and tour across the US and Europe often playing bass and synthesizer. This video is special as we had just been signed to a label and we went to Puerto Rico to make this video with incredible Puerto Rican visual artist, Beatriz Santiago Muñoz. It was the beginning of a path we are still playing on.
Prince of Queens – Macaria’s Funk (2024)
This is a track from my latest EP “Merida” out on Razor-N-Tape. This EP really brings together a lot of the different influences that I’ve fallen in love with over the years.
As a DJ I’m constantly trying to bridge the gap between underground dance music, and tropical Latin sounds. I wanted to make a record that could work in my DJ sets, with different tempos and timbres but still make it my own and unique.
Conclusion.
Thank you, Prince of Queens, for sharing your incredible journey and the tracks that have influenced your sound. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out his latest EP, “Merida,” available now on Razor-N-Tape. Trust me, this is one record you’ll want in your collection, it’s a definitive statement from an artist whose name you’ll be hearing a lot more of in the club scene. Stay tuned for more music, and don’t forget to follow Prince of Queens on his musical adventures!
