For this Track Talk, I’m diving into something that instantly grabbed me for its rawness, attitude, and straight-up club honesty. Salt Queen, the project of visual artist and musician Magali van Caloen together with Samples From Mars founder Teddy Mars, delivers a debut that doesn’t try to please… it provokes. And that’s exactly why it works.
Operating out of New York, this duo taps into a very hardware-driven, analog aesthetic, but flips it with a dry, almost ironic take on club culture. Their debut release ARE U OK feels like one of those late-night moments we’ve all experienced on the dancefloor. Slightly uncomfortable, slightly surreal, but impossible to ignore.
What I personally like here is that it strips things back to the core. No fluff, no overproduction. Just energy, tension, and a concept that hits you right in the face.
So I had to dig a little deeper. Let’s get into it with Magali van Caloen.
This song feels like a prayer. A meditative pause in any mix.
Psychic TV and Genesis P-Orridge have been important inspirations to my music and art practice for many years. A remix that allows me to dance to a Psychic TV song is aaaalways welcome.
One of the first songs Teddy and I vibed out to. Solidified our shared taste!
This song first entered my life as a teenager. I was living near the sea, feeling lost and melancholic – as you do at 17. It feels like a romanticization of this moment.
A song that gets stuck in my head at least once a week.
A classic that can be listened to in any situation.
First heard this in after hours spots in Brussels as a teen! Been a solid part of my rotation since then.
An acid symphony.
You’re out, faded, and can’t find your friends.
Big shout to Magali and Teddy for bringing something genuinely different to the table. This is the kind of release that reminds you that club music doesn’t always have to be polished, sometimes it just needs to feel real.
If you’re into raw acid, hardware-driven grooves and tracks that capture the weird, unpredictable side of nightlife, go check out ARE U OK and support the release.
And as always, let me know… would you play this in your set, or is this one strictly for the deeper, later hours?
