Having emerged as favorites on various dance-floors over the years, the German duo step forward to present their first EP on the South London Rhythm Section label: ‘Basic Instinct’.
Renowned for their unmatched energy live and as DJs, Hauke and Matthias are the standard bearers of soulful, sample-driven house music and a dedication to the art of DJing on vinyl. With the never-ending search for the perfect beat at the core of their activities, it’s no wonder they found a deep connection to Rhythm Section International over the years of playing for each other, jamming in the studio and running into each other at festivals and airports around the world. In a nutshell, this record is the unavoidable outcome of two very passionate and like-minded bands, a match made in heaven that took a long time to realize!

Despite hailing from the techno hotspots of Berlin and Hamburg, Session Victim is a direct descendant of the German Jazzy House masters, drawing inspiration from Jazzanova, Soulphiction and Compost Records, who inspired a revival of this more soulful sound in German nightclubs, spurred on by labels like Tartelet and Toy Tonics, with whom the pair recently dropped an EP.
This most recent effort Session Victim – Basic Instinct on Rhythm Section International is a masterclass in restraint, showing a deep understanding of the dynamics of the dance floor, putting the maxim “less is more” to great effect.
The opening track, “Trying To Make it Home,” is immediately very engaging: a double bass riff leads along a Kerri Chandler type of filtered piano pattern, which leads the way to a beautiful gospel voice.
The solid groove then takes control, as flutes, strings, and guitar licks blend into the mix to create a true “heads down, arms up” moment on the dance floor.
