I’ve been eagerly waiting for this one and trust me, Audio Proxemics by the Situation collective does not disappoint.
Led by Mr. Mulatto and Frank Situation, this crew has always had a special way of blending deep musicality with groove-heavy sophistication. On this new album, they explore a wide emotional and sonic range across nine beautifully crafted tracks. From jazz-laced deep house to soulful nu-disco, it’s a warm, rich listen from start to finish. And with guest contributions from artists like Javonntte, Robin Lee of Faze Action, and more, there’s a depth and diversity here that really stands out.
I’ve followed Situation for a while now. They’re a tight collective of DJs, producers, editors, and musicians based in the Five Valleys of Stroud, UK, and their roots in the electronic scene run deep. Whether it’s through throwing free parties, curating releases under various aliases, or running their own label Situationism Records since 2014, they’ve always had a clear vision and serious taste. Past releases have featured legends like Ashley Beedle, Greg Wilson, and Dr. Packer, so expectations were high for this new full-length.
The album itself has been in the works for over two years, kicking off with three tracks recorded by South African vocalist Vanessa Jackson while she was touring the UK. Her voice adds a soulful magic that really sets the tone. She’s joined by a global cast of vocalists, as well as Situation core members James Payne, Phil aka Dr Keys, and Jon Gray aka BitterSuite, who handle bass, guitar, production, and arrangement duties.
What I really appreciate about Audio Proxemics is its timeless feel. There’s real musicianship on display, everything feels alive and organic. One of my personal favorites is Bullit, where Javonntte brings that smoky vocal charm to a sun-drenched, flute-kissed house groove. Never Taken A Weekend Off is another highlight, a broken beat beauty with lush synths and unmistakable Brit funk flair. And then there’s Fairy Godmother, which just radiates feel-good energy, thanks in part to Robin Lee’s string arrangement and a slick, acid jazz-inspired vocal that ties it all together.
Other gems? Mrs Donovan is made for the club, dusty house drums, glistening keys, and that classic Situation finesse. Over & Over brings a looser, jazzy vibe with lovely percussion and brass, while Rodborough Groove feels like a love letter to summer, playful, uplifting, and perfect for golden hour listening.
All in all, Audio Proxemics is a full-bodied, heartfelt album that reflects the depth and experience of the artists behind it. If you’re into music that grooves with soul and sparkles with intention, do yourself a favor and give this a spin. It’s one of those records that gets better with every listen, and trust me, it’s going to be in heavy rotation for a while.
Afrika Bambaataa & Soul Sonic Force – Looking For The Perfect Beat (1983)
This is when I first heard the 808 drum machine in music, which sonically changed everything! First heard it on the street from a boombox, watching someone do the robot for the first time – my teenage mind was blown and I was hooked!
Attitude “Love Me Tonight” (1983)
Used to have this on a cassette tape that I recorded from Robbie Vincents’ radio show and I used to have it on repeat …fond memories of blasting it out from my Mk1 Ford Capri when I had first learnt to drive. This to me is a masterpiece of 1980’s boogie in my opinion, which will stay with me forever – the beats, the bass, the synths, vocals, arrangement – EVERYTHING – goosebumps every time!
Adonis – No Way Back (1986)
Wild Bunch Soundsystem – DJ Milo played it over the biggest sounds system I had ever seen at St. Paul’s Carnival – it was the first time I had ever heard house music and it literally stopped me in my tracks …I was 16/17
808 state – Pacific State (1989)
Massive teen memories, festivals, dancing, soaking up music and totally loving it
Drum Machines & synthesizers. Top of the Pops!
Chez N Trent – The Choice (1993)
We have also at been blown away by Chez Damier & Ron Trent Prescription records was massive for us and the choice is one of many tracks that captures the pure raw soul of their perfect sound.
Roach Motel – The Right Time (1993)
Love the old junior boys owns tunes, and this reminds me of DiY dj DK from obsession which was a significant mix tape for us .
Ian Pooley – What’s Your Number (Jazzanova Renumber) (1998)
This has everything I love in music all the right amounts and for whatever reason I never tire of hearing it! A masterpiece by Jazzanova – broken beats, jazz, boogie, funk, Latin, deep house, great dubbed out vocals and snippets of samples ….such an infectious groove! …and has a warmth and depth that can be rare in electronic music sometimes
BRS – Lovin’ Me (Dubtribe Sound System Remix) (2000)
Our second release and with the blissed out Dubtribe sound system remix.
Heard this out so many times and loads of compilation CDs over the years.
Larry Heard played it at the big chill, nice moment.
Amp Fiddler ft Dames Brown – Slippin on ya pimpin (Situation remix)
Amp Fidddler has been a massive musical hero of ours. We saw Amp & Tony Allen at Fiddlers in Bristol about a month before the first lock down and it was mind blowing.
Then given the chance to remix this track with Dames Brown who are Detroit vocal royalty, was fabulous. Amp Fiddler is missed
Situation ft Maurice Smith – Pusherman (Sean McCabe remix)
Did this gospel track with Maurice Smith on the album and we instantly knew we wanted Sean McCabe to remix it. Sean’s remix is proper soul house with deep and rich textures. Amazing remix action
Audio Proxemics isn’t just an album, it’s a culmination of years of experience, influences, and deep musical passion from the Situation crew. With standout collaborations and a timeless, organic feel, it’s one of those rare records that invites you back for repeated listens. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a first-time listener, this one’s made to move both body and soul. Expect it to stay in rotation for a long time to come.
