Hey everyone, it’s a real pleasure to dive into this one! Today, I get to sit down with SofaTalk, a true master of blending old-school vibes with modern electronica. What I love about SofaTalk is his ability to merge such a wide array of influences into something fresh and exciting. From his roots in jazz to his passion for Chicago House, SofaTalk is the type of artist who brings you on a journey with every release. Today, we’re talking about the ten tracks that have shaped him as a musician and producer, giving us a rare glimpse into the sounds that fuel his creative fire. Let’s get started!
Herbie Hancock – Man-Child
My selection definitely starts with Herbie Hancock, my spiritual father. The most important source of my artistic education. I have his entire discography and choosing a favorite track or album is a challenge. “Man-Child” was the first album I bought, so I have so many memories tied to it. “Sun Touch” is my favorite track.
2. Konk – Your Life (What U Want)
Formed in 1980 in New York City, KONK was a band that emerged during a period marked by the post-punk/new wave and disco scenes which were prevalent at the time. I love all of Sleeping Bag Records’ discography but in particular this EP from 1986 is truly innovative and experimental for its time.
3. 4Hero Two Pages – full album
The first work of 4Hero, released on Gilles Peterson’s Talkin’ Loud in 1997. This album was a milestone for my artistic path. Drum n Bass, Future Jazz, Downtempo that then made the history of this seminal sound made exclusively in UK.
4. Burnt Friedman – Demolition Derby
Track from the album “Con Ritmo”, 2000. I discovered this incredible artist with this album. I love all the discography of Burnt Friedman and Flanger (Friedman & Atom) but in particular this track sends me into orbit every time I listen to it. Abstract jazz funk with that Moog bass that dialogues perfectly with the acoustic drums.
5.Bjørn Torske – Spelunker I bought this Album London in 2007, Bjørn Torske is a genius, I think Feil Knapp is his most experimental release to date, inspired by dub, alternative-pop and 90’s English electronic music. Inspiration for many of my productions.
6. Fatima – Red Light feat. Floating Points I love Fatima, all her releases are a beautiful balance of cutting edge, contemporary production, soulful expression, melancholic introspection and vibrant melody.
This track included in the 2011 EP “Follow You” released on Eglo Records in collaboration with Floating Points (one of my all-time favorite producers) is a masterpiece, a lightful UK-house arrangement with percussive instruments coming in and out during the the record.
7. Max Ox Intro/Cat Rhino I discovered them by chance, in my endless travels on streaming platforms. “Your Drunken Soundtrack”, from 2014 is a wonderful album, unfortunately it was only released digitally. It is an exceptional Jazz fusion collection. The keyboardist, Jacob Mann with his inseparable Roland Juno 106 builds arrangements, chords, solos, arpeggios like a true alchemist.
8. Hiatus Kayote – By Fire
“Choose Your Weapon” is a great album, as is the whole discography of Hiatus Kayote. Their sound is a fusion of future beats, hip-hop and soul with subtler influences of Latin, dubstep and opera. I love the unique timbre of the voice of the chief songwriter Nai Palm. My favorite track is By Fire, magical future soul.
9. Basement Membrane – Punk Funk
One of the recent albums purchased. First released by Innertribe only in digital, then released on Vinyl by Wicked Wax. Basement membrane is a band formed by exceptional musicians among which Bjazz11 and Mishulino stand out, two keyboard players that I love very much.
Punk Funk is an album that should be listened to with the volume up, feeling the sonic energy it come along. Easly flowing from nu-jazz textures, funky chords and broken-beat live drumming, the Basement Membrane members are not shy in demonstrating their musical prowess. One that connects over innovative ideas and perspectives on jazz music.
10. Sofatalk feat. Erin buku – Two Hearts
For the last one I definitely choose my new EP. “Two Hearts” was born from my desire to work with that typical sound of the Chicago house of the late 80s (think of productions by labels like Bottom Line, Emotive, Big Beat & Easy Street). I’m really excited about the collaboration with Erin, a singer that I respect a lot and who has really given an exceptional contribution to this release.
Last few words.
That was an amazing journey through SofaTalk’s musical world! Huge thanks to him for sharing these incredible tracks that have shaped his sound. Don’t forget to check out his latest release, Two Hearts, featuring the stunning vocals of Erin Buku. You can stream and buy it now and experience the Chicago House influence blended with SofaTalk’s signature modern twist. Dive in and let the vibes take over!
