I’m thrilled to sit down with the talented duo, Sons of Sevilla, two brothers whose music transcends their years. Henry and Reuben Smith, with roots in the vibrant atmosphere of their family pub, have crafted a sound that echoes the soul of the 70s while pushing the boundaries of modern music. Ahead of their debut album release, Lullabies for a Wildcat, we catch up with them to delve into their creative journey, influences, and what’s next on their musical horizon.

Thanks for talking to us. Where are you at this moment and how are you spending the day?

Thanks for having us. We’re currently both back home in Featherstone in rehearsals ready to kick off the tour.

How long have you both been making music? What were your first steps as musicians?

Sons Of Sevilla began in the summer of 2020. Our first steps as musicians would be just going to a lot of gigs growing up in Leeds, watching our mates in bands and going to Leeds Festival a lot. Soaking it all in…

Are you a DJ too?

Reuben spins a few records every now and then..

What kind of artists and genres were both into growing up?

We’ve been exposed to a lot of different music growing up. Too much to mention. We once found a Rage Against The Machine album in an old box of hundreds of CD’s when we were kids, and the riffs definitely resonated with us a lot.

Who would you say is your biggest musical inspiration?

Just Good Music 😊

Is there an album that you heard as kids that has really stayed with you?

What’s The Story Morning Glory …

Who are the artists that you guys follow right now?

We’ve both been getting back into the Black Keys lately.

What is the most recent record you purchased or downloaded?

Do people download music anymore?

If you could choose a few words to describe the vibe of Sons of Sevilla what would they be?

This one’s for the listeners..

How long has the album been in the making?

The album has been finished and ready for 4 years. We wrote it in a month or two back in the 2020 lockdown.

What parts do you both play in your productions?

Each track styles out differently. It usually depends on who hears the part first and then we roll from there

How good are you at not falling out?

Like water off a duck’s back ..

Tell us a little about your studio set up.. what does it consist of?

This record was made in our dads old workshop. Reuben turned it into a little studio and hang out spot during the lockdown. We literally had a laptop with Logic on, one guitar, a bass guitar, Reubens keyboard and an old drum machine. Bizarrely we sold the drum machine on Reverb to Nicolas Godin of Air.

Are there any other musicians on this LP that you would like to shout out?

Our canary was hanging outside the studio so if you listen closely he made it on the record.

Did you have anyone throughout the album process who was your ‘sound board’?

We like to trust our own ears. Too many cooks spoil the broth.

This is not your first project with Ubiquity. Tell us about your previous work with them?

Reubens third solo record ‘Da Cuckoo Ya Ya’ came out last summer on Ubiquity.

How much input did the label have in the final product?

The label gives us free reign on our creativity. They trust and support our vision totally

What else are you working on currently?

We’ve just recorded our second album and hope to have that out early next year. We went out to Austin TX in April to Electric Deluxe Recorders, a studio owned by Black Pumas guitar player and producer Adrian Quesada. Adrian produced the record and played on a couple of tunes.

What are your ambitions as young artists?

To keep making records and earn some brass along the way!

When you are not making music, what do you like to do to kick back?

We go to the pub.

Where do you think is the best place to listen to Lullabies For A Wildcat?

As long as you’re listening, we are not bothered where you are…

Thank you!

Thank you, Henry and Reuben, for sharing your incredible journey with us. As you prepare to take the world by storm, we can’t wait to see where your music takes you next. For everyone eager to experience their unique sound, don’t miss out, Lullabies for a Wildcat is out now on all streaming platforms. Dive into the sonic journey and let the music of Sons of Sevilla transport you.
