Electronic music is built on legacies, sounds that ripple through time, shaping generations of artists. For Matt White and Paul Baines, aka Synaptic Voyager, Sheffield’s deep-rooted electronic heritage is woven into their DNA. From the early warehouse raves of the ’90s to today’s immersive techno landscapes, their journey has been a testament to passion, evolution, and an unrelenting love for machine-made music. As they prepare to drop their new Dawn Till Dusk EP, they take us on a personal tour through the tracks that have defined their sound, from the raw energy of Cybotron to the soulful mastery of Underground Resistance. Buckle up for a deep dive into the records that made them who they are.

Synaptic Voyager press shot

1.MANUEL GÖTTSCHING — E2-E4 (1981)

Many will recall Derrick May’s remix based on this track, incredible electronic work here, there is very little else like it, even today. How was this possible in 1981?

2. CYBOTRON – CLEAR (1983)

Hard to believe that this sinister electronic masterpiece was produced in 1983. This track and the next one show what’s possible with a Roland TR-808 drum machine. A big part of how Paul got into electronic music.

3: HASHIM – AL NAAFIYSH (THE SOUL) (1983)

This tune is as fresh today as it was in 1983, and it was impossibly fresh back then. A futuristic track, but one that also seemed to be there from the beginning of time.

4. MR. FINGERS – CAN U FEEL IT (1986)

Simply beautiful piece of music from Larry Heard, a true pioneer. Hearing this being played in clubs long ago was surreal. This massive track caused us to spend our wages on keyboards and drum machines just to see a glimpse into this world that Larry was a huge part of creating.

5. BABY FORD – FORDTRAX (1988)

Over to England for this pure electronic wizardry, a hugely inspiring track. One of my most played records, says Matt, who is still wearing out the cassette version of the album, similarly titled FORD TRAX.

6. ANNETTE – DREAM 17 (1988)

Here is a track so great, it seems like a genre in itself. A phenomenal sequence of intense crispness. Timing, bass line, vocals come together so solidly. I warn you, listening to this track while driving can be dangerous 🙂

7. DERRICK MAY – DREAMS OF DREAMERS (c.1992)

We were teased with small snippets of this track on the TRANSMAT – RELICS album of 1992, in itself an unusually great album, then the full track was gifted to the world later in Derrick May’s “Innovator” album. Dreams can, very rarely, yield such music. But until we can hook up our minds to the machines, tracks like this will be a rare thing.

TRANSMAT – RELICS:

DREAMS OF DREAMERS:

8. UNDERGROUND RESISTANCE – THE ILLUMINATOR (1995)

Underground Resistance could make a soulful musical masterpiece with a stylophone, I have no doubt. Incredible melodies, strings, and synths, this one has it all. UR have produced some iconic tracks, but we both agree that the melody here is out of this world.

9. THE OTHER PEOPLE PLACE – LET ME BE ME (2001)

James Stinson blessed us with many great tracks, and this one is a pinnacle, standing atop a mountain of other icons. A smooth bassline underpins this phenomenal track. One of the finest ever produced.

10: SYNAPTIC VOYAGER – COGNITIVE NETWORK (2025)

There are rumours that these fellows are using some kind of time machine to make tracks with a retro feel. I can confirm this, says Matt, although he claims that the tracks were actually produced in the year 7092, and beamed back to the current timeframe encoded in a fairly enormous wave of anti-neutrinos, the same wave that turns the planet Earth into a smoking, radioactive ruin. So, make the most of what you’ve got, because it only lasts until 7092.  You can find our latest release here:

Summary

A journey through music history, and a nod to the future, Synaptic Voyager’s sound is a bridge between the past and the present, staying true to the soul of electronic music. Their new Dawn Till Dusk EP is a perfect reflection of this ethos, packed with deep grooves, analog warmth, and the unmistakable Sheffield spirit. Big thanks to Matt and Paul for sharing their influences with us, be sure to check out their latest release and experience the evolution of their sound firsthand.
