Electronic music producers are often defined by the records that shaped them long before they stepped into the studio. For Canadian producer Reagan Grey, that musical journey runs through the heart of acid house, New York soulful house, rave culture and deep warehouse grooves.

In this edition of Ten Tracks That Made Me, Reagan Grey shares ten records that played a defining role in shaping her sound and musical identity. The selection moves through legendary artists like Kerri Chandler, Nuyorican Soul and Basement Jaxx, revealing the musical DNA behind her productions.

From hypnotic acid house loops to emotional vocal house and rave era anthems, these tracks represent more than just influences. They represent moments that helped define a producer’s creative path.

If you are a fan of soulful house, deep house, garage influenced grooves or the classic New York and Chicago sound, this list offers a fascinating look into the music that inspired Reagan Grey.

TLDR:

Reagan Grey reveals the 10 tracks that shaped her sound, including classics from Kerri Chandler, Nuyorican Soul and Basement Jaxx. Her music is also featured in Dirty Disco episode 639, where these influences come together in a deep house focused mix.

1. A Guy Called Gerald – Voodoo Ray

Early exposure acid house that set me on the path. You don’t have to look far to find the acid in my tracks, it has stayed with me.

2. Kerri Chandler – Atmospheric Beats

Kerri has come up with some of my favourite chord progressions and this is one of them. The keys are incredibly soulful and uplifting. It also reinforces the power of a beautiful loop, it can be hypnotic.

3. River Ocean ft India – Love and Happiness

I love the many turns in this track, from the tribal drums to the smooth synths and India’s incredible vocals. I actually interviewed India for a music documentary I was shooting in the 90’s. She sang this to me right on her balcony, from two feet away. It was epic. She’s the real deal, her voice is just as powerful in person as it is on this record.

4. Chez-N Trent – The Choice (Full Dosage Mix)

Growing up in Toronto, we had a lot of exposure to music from Chicago and New York. Chez Damier and Ron Trent’s Prescription releases really represent that warehouse energy for me.

5. Nuyorican Soul – The Nervous Track

A foundational track that pushed the boundaries of the genre, with the signature sound of Louis Vega and Kenny Dope. It’s both soulful and clubby and captures the NYC house sound.

6. Jam & Spoon – Stella

I was very influenced by rave culture. This track captures that main-room energy of huge parties, and the uplifting synth-heavy tracks from that time.

7. Liberty City – If You Really Love Somebody

Oscar G and Ralph Falcon released a string of incredible vocal tracks in the 90’s. Their productions were stripped back and highly club-effective. Filed under ‘the dancing years’ that really shaped my world view in music.

8. Basement Jaxx – Fly Life

The filters in this track are everything, they’re completely wild and the builds are electric. Major dancefloor material.

9. Mike Grant – The Struggle Of My People (Mr. G’s There’s Hope Mix)

Smooth and sophisticated production but still gritty. I absolutely love this type of deep house.

10. Reagan Grey – Starlight

A pure dancefloor track that reflects many of my influences. Touches of US garage, keys, and filtered vocals. Sometimes it takes time to build a track into its best state. Other times it comes together quickly. That was the case with Starlight, I knew right away that it was a special one.

Final Thoughts

Looking at Reagan Grey’s selections, one thing becomes clear. Her sound is deeply rooted in the golden eras of house music.

From the hypnotic acid of A Guy Called Gerald to the soulful chords of Kerri Chandler and the club energy of Basement Jaxx, these tracks form a bridge between classic house culture and modern deep house production.

For listeners and DJs, this list is more than a playlist. It is a blueprint of influences that continue to shape the underground electronic music scene today.

And for producers, it is a reminder that great dance music often begins with inspiration from the records that moved us first.
