The 27th edition of the event will begin this Friday, August 26th near to Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. The Line-up, as well as each stage.

The 2022 edition is expected to be another blockbuster, with a line-up that will include the current stars of EDM and Hard (in particular Q-Dance / Thunderdome). It’s also nice to see various styles on certain days, such as Sexy by Nature, Heldeep Records, or Trance Energy. On Saturday, Sven Väth’s Cocoon stage will return and be replaced by Carl Cox and his Awesome Soundwave.

One notable aspect of the festival is that there are many stages at the campsite! The campers can enjoy a program reserved for them on Friday (like the famous Gathering of Tomorrowland). As the festival ends quite early (end of the sets around 11pm every night), afterparties at the campsite are planned with an equally excellent lineup!

Mysteryland: A Look Back at the Festival’s History

The festival’s first edition was in 1993. It wasn’t organized by ID&T at the time, but rather TNT (The Nation’s Top) by Sander Groet and Brian Bout. Additionally, it didn’t take place in Haarlemmermeer like later editions, instead it was located in Lelystad which is north of Amsterdam. Despite being popular among those who attended, this 3-day event ended up as a financial failure. The next year saw the festival move to Rotterdam and TNT joined forces with ID&T; however, they also experienced heavy losses financially which jeopardized whether or not the festival could continue onwards. Thus 1995 became the only year where no edition took place.

3 years later refocused to hardcore.

The festival was created in 1996, and its name and fairy theme remained unchanged. However, the event is now only one night instead of three days, and it takes place at Eindhoven airport in the south of the Netherlands. The artistic direction has been refocused on hardcore/gabber music, which is very popular in the Netherlands with an artistic program shared with Thunderdome.

Floriade and Winter editions.

It’s only in 2003, that the festival settled permanently in Haarlemmermeer, in the Floriade, in a place that hosted one year earlier the decennial World Horticulture Exhibition! In the meantime the festival will have changed location almost every year and there will have been some Mysteryland Winter events at the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht.

More genres & eclectic music.

The programming of Mysteryland has gradually opened up to other electro currents, including trance, house and techno from the late 90s while maintaining an important part of its programming to hard music. In 2006, the festival even opened to hip-hop. With the advent of EDM as a popular music, it is since then, an eclectic festival that does not only gather an electro community but also festival-goers who come for the fairy-tale universe and the numerous activities and curiosities that can be found there.

David Guetta having discovered America in the late 2000s, EDM having become a new religion in this region of the globe, the festival crosses the Atlantic and is exported in 2011 to Chile, initially for 3 editions before returning to the north in 2014. It is then that the festival crosses to the USA to settle in Bethel, the same place where the Woodstock festival was held! Several editions will take place before Mysteryland packs up after the 2017 edition.

Since then, the festival lives on, like a happy retirement near Amsterdam, and delights festival-goers from all over the world with its fairy-tale and more intimate universe than its little brother, Tomorrowland, which now captures all the attention.
