Tonarunur releases this week ‘ Geimotheque’- a gorgeous slice of electronic disco via San Francisco tastemakers, Dream Chimney. Tonarunur hails from the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik. His music is diverse, ranging from Sunday-friendly pieces to dance-floor-oriented grooves and has been released on Eskimo Recordings and Whiskey Disco.
The ‘Geimotheque EP’ is a testament to Tonarunur’s ability to blend classic disco influences with modern production techniques. Kicking off with the slow-burn of ‘Give Me Your Word’, followed by the more dancefloor-ready energy of the ‘Whose Future?’. Picking up the pace with the deep, bass-heavy ‘Will I See You Again?’, culminating in the epic, eleven-minute masterful space disco symphony ‘Lifting Off.’
Here the Icelandic producer takes us through Ten Tracks that mark his journey in music.
Aphex Twin – Tha:
His music has influenced me a lot through the years so I had to pick one from his huge catalog. This one is absolutely sublime.
Bill Evans – “My Foolish Heart” on Bill Evans live “Waltz for Debby”:
Beautiful. Not only the music itself but also how it blends in with the various sounds of the audience.
Naturalist – Naturalist.
It’s hard to pick a single track, a single album or a single moniker from Uwe Schmidt’s catalog. I could have chosen Los Samplers, Flanger or even his better known Senor Coconut project. He’s truly an incredible musician and the way he balances true craftsmanship with humor is unique and second to none.
GAS – POP.
This is probably the record I’ve spent most time listening to. Dreamy and otherworldly music par excellence.
Don Carlos – Alone:
One of the finest examples of a dreamy house track. The build up, the soundscape, the sincerity.
Telex – Moscow Discow.
Groovy, funny, beautiful. I enjoy many of their songs but this is probably my favourite one.
Luomo – The Right Wing.
I also could have picked any of the other tracks on the masterpiece that is Vocalcity. His Present Lover album is also great and so is the music he made under other aliases such as Vladislav Delay.
Akufen – Skidoos.
Dreamy, groovy and thumping. What more can you ask for?
Starshine – All I Need Is You (Instrumental).
I truly love well crafted post-disco music. However many of the tracks from the golden age have a bit too much vocals in them for my taste. This one is a great example of a mostly vocal-free boogie-groove.
For one of my own songs I chose “Lifting Off” from my latest release, “Geimotheque”.
I spent a lot of time on this one and I must admit that I’m rather happy with how it turned out. Have a listen to the track at the 52:48 mark.
Thank you
