Melbourne producer, Dawn Again, is about to drop his ‘Every Dog’s Hotel EP’ on Marco Gallerani’s Hell Yeah Recordings. A dreamy, downtempo, breaks driven affair that shows an impressive depth of knowledge in lo-fi sound. His vibe is both sunlit and sunset-ready and is for grown-up crowds who like to get down. This EP was made during the global lockdown when he was listening to a ton of downtempo by Heights of Abraham, Pork Recordings, Baby Mammoth and Bullitnuts. We had the pleasure to have a track talk with Dawn Again about the tracks that influenced his career.
We wanted to further explore Nick Verway’s tastes and inspirations, so we asked him to put together ten tracks that have been important along his musical journey.
1. Paul McCartney – Let Em In (Jimi Bazooka edit)
Seemingly gets a run at all my afterhours. I love a disco edit that starts with a great loop then builds into a huge climax…then back to the loop. Shout out to my mate Nick who equally loves this track as much as I do.
2. Discolexia – how long
Similar to the first edit. A great loop that seems to go forever, and then crashes out of nowhere into a track that everyone weirdly knows every single word of without knowing how…
3. Joe Dassin – Blue Country
Sexy, chilled out, ridiculously French. Can’t say my record bag is full to the brim with “Balearic French country music” but this never leaves it…
4. 10cc – Im Not In Love
“Big boys don’t cry, big boys don’t cry”. Safe to say if you are kicking on with me, a fair amount of dad rock is getting played. Always loved his track. The pads are like a spa day for your ears…
5. Bullitnuts – Heavy Air
A big inspiration for Every Dog’s Hotel. A magnificent downtempo gem! A funky bassline that will be stuck in your head for weeks, months…years. You will listen to this track and 3 weeks later out of nowhere you’ll wake up humming the bassline. Great after hours jam.
6. Blue Gas – Shadows from nowhere
A classic. Has been making the rounds in Melbourne now for years, and I never get sick of it.
7. Zenit – Waiting
Same as the above. I haven’t checked the fine print but I think it’s illegal to not play these two tracks before or after each other. Don’t pass go, don’t collect $200, straight to jail.
8. Georg Danzer – wer bist du
Shout out to my mate Meg for showing me this coked out 80s new age belter! So sexy, so cheeky, you can’t not nod your head to this. No idea what he’s talking about, he could be reciting his shopping list for all I know, but damn it sounds good!
9. Jovanotti – Marco Polo
Heard this in a Sopranos episode. The one where Chris goes to Italy and spends the whole time doing drugs instead of seeing the volcano. Again, I don’t have a ton of Italian trip hop in the bag but this hits. Real fun to mix in as well
10. Chris Rea – Bombolini
My partner Carmen loves this track. I found the record at a store around the corner from where I live for a couple bucks. Its dramatic, its cinematic yet obscenely Balearic, only the god Chris Rea can get into those type of areas.
Final words and end conclusion.
